The Gem Box is a special obstacle; The Gem Box ignores the 1 tile buffer zone and will spawn in any 2x2 space inside your base. The Gem Box is affected by the 40 Obstacle cap and will not spawn if the cap is exceeded. The spawning of Gem Boxes are either completely random or controlled by an algorithm that is kept private to SuperCell. Seasonal obstacles only spawn once in a lifetime in Clash of Clans. Seasonal obstacles have a higher spawn rate compared to regular obstacles, so it’s possible that it spawns after a short period. New obstacles spawn on the home base every 8 hours. So you can get up to 88 gems per week just by clearing the obstacles . Obstacles only spawn in empty spaces, and if there is a building or wall or anything else in that space, you lose the gems that the obstacle would have awarded if it had spawned there.
Because from my observations it seems that obstacle spawn rate becomes more limited as the total available space decreases, rather than spawning once every 8 hours for as long as there is still space and the cap is not met. Some of the lull in daily spawns can surely be explained by All you can do is clearing out obstacles as often as possible to have as many spawning spots for obstacles available, but as a Town Hall 11, you can expect to not spawn more than 30% of all obstacles you could spawn simply because your base will cover most of the spots. The respawn rate of obstacles is diminished when the only area to spawn are white area (yeah gembox can spam in white area) and only spaces left are next to it, since it rather spawn 1 inch away from white area. That's why when you use your whole base you will have a slow rate of respawn in your obstacles. That's an average of 2 gems per obstacle. Obstacles spawn every 8 hours, meaning 3 obstacles per day. 3 obstacles multiplied by 2 gems is 6 gems per day if you regularly destroy them. With this info, you can determine when, at the latest, you'll save enough gems to make a purchase.
