There are three AFR tiers based on the repayment term of a family loan: (1) Short-term rates, for loans with a repayment term up to three years. (2) Mid-term rates, for loans with a repayment term between three and nine years. (3) Long-term rates, for loans with a repayment term greater than nine years. As of January 2019, the IRS stated that the annual short-term AFR was 2.72%, the mid-term AFR was 2.89%, and the long-term AFR was 3.15%. Please bear in mind, that these AFR rates are subject to change by the IRS. Let's say you were giving a loan to a family member for $10,000 to be paid back in one year.
