The basic underlying concept is to buy a security, hold it for a short period of time, and then sell it. This is done to try and take advantage of short-term, oftentimes small fluctuations in the stock price. Just like all other trading and/or investing, if your good at it you make money and a lot of it. Although I am basically a position trader, there's no way would I have any opposition to day trading. If I were to buy something and the stock spiked, I would sell it in a New York minute. A good approach to take in investing in the stock market is dollar cost averaging by which the same amount of money is invested in particular stocks over time. Sometimes the purchase price will be high, other times low but it usually averages out at a good level. Ultimately, Day trading is really only a good idea if you have a large amount of money to invest. I say this for the exact reason you pointing out: you don't want to get eaten alive by commissions. The exception to this rule is if you use a discount broker than charges on a per-share basis (like InteractiveBrokers for example).
