The number of unemployed people decreased by 105 thousand to 5.79 million while employment rose by 45 thousand to 158.76 million. The rate was down by 0.6 percentage point from the December 2016 rate of 4.7 percent. BLS publishes six alternative measures of labor underutilization, known as U-1 through U-6, each month. The U-6 rate was 8.1 percent in December 2017. Current U-6 Unemployment Rate: For February 2020 the official Current Unadjusted U-6 unemployment rate was 7.4% down from 7.7% in January. Unemployment rates are typically up in January. The official unemployment rate is defined as "total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force," but doesn't include a number of employment situations in which workers may find themselves.
