Shale oil is a high-quality crude oil that lies between layers of shale rock, impermeable mudstone, or siltstone. Oil companies produce shale oil by fracturing the rock formations that contain the layers of oil. Shale oil extraction process decomposes oil shale and converts its kerogen into shale oil—a petroleum-like synthetic crude oil. The process is conducted by pyrolysis , hydrogenation , or thermal dissolution . Some of the gas produced is held in natural fractures, some in pore spaces, and some is adsorbed onto the shale matrix. Further, the adsorption of gas is a process of physisorption, exothermic and spontaneous. The process of extracting liquid crude oil from the ground is comparatively simple to extracting oil shale. Pressure from gases trapped in the chamber where oil is present force the crude oil to the surface. After this pressure is alleviated, the more difficult secondary and tertiary phases of oil drilling begin. The shale revolution is far from confined to the US, however, with countries as far afield as China, Argentina and Russia also playing host to huge reserves of shale oil and gas. If these countries proceed to take up fracking in much the same way as the US has done, an overdependence on Middle Eastern reserves will diminish and global prices will fall. Shale oil is an unconventional oil produced from oil shale rock fragments by pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal dissolution. These processes convert the organic matter within the rock into synthetic oil and gas. The resulting oil can be used immediately as a fuel or upgraded to meet refinery feedstock specifications by adding hydrogen and removing impurities such as sulfur and nitrogen. The refined products can be used for the same purposes as those derived from crude oil. The term "shale oil" Shale gas is natural gas produced from shale formations that typically function as both the reservoir and the source rocks for the natural gas. In terms of chemical makeup, shale gas is typically a dry gas composed primarily of methane (60–95% v/v), but some formations do produce wet gas.
