Tick based charts represent price change during given number of transactions on the market. E.g. while time-based charts draw a new bar after a set period of time, tick charts display a certain number of trades (ticks) before printing a new bar. A chart drawing a bar after every 30 transaction is often referred to as a 30-tick chart. The tick index measures the short term health of the markets by taking the difference between the number of stocks on an uptick and the number of stocks on a downtick.   The tick index sums up this difference for all stocks in the New York Stock Exchange. They are not feasible in the Forex market, as there is no centralized exchange, and ticks don’t mean anything there. However, in Futures, there are centralized exchanges, and globally, every trade that comes into a certain market, is registered at the respective exchange with a certain volume and this information is accessible by everyone.
